That’s the test here. Five kits sold in Australia, prices checked on 5 October 2026, each audited against the gear a safe home wash needs, then costed for what you’d have to buy to finish the job.
Which car detailing kit should you buy?
Bowden’s Own The Essentials Starter Kit ($244.99) is the only kit here that’s complete out of the box, with two buckets, two grit guards, a wash pad, drying towel and a spray sealant. It’s also the dearest. The smarter budget buy is two products: the $49.95 Waxit Car Wash Kit plus Bowden’s $77.99 bucket set, for $127.94 all up.

What should a beginner car detailing kit include?
Two buckets with a grit guard, a pH-neutral shampoo, a microfibre mitt and a proper drying towel. That’s the core. One bucket holds soapy water, the other rinses the mitt, and the grit guard lets dirt settle below the wash tools, as Bowden’s Own describes it. Protection and wheel cleaner come next, not first.
The pH-neutral part matters once a car has a wax, sealant or coating. Gyeon says its Bathe shampoo won’t harm a ceramic coating because it’s pH-neutral, and the same logic applies to most quality car washes. Dishwashing liquid strips protection, so leave it in the kitchen.
Water rules are the other Australian quirk. In Melbourne, Yarra Valley Water’s permanent rules allow home car washing at any time with a high-pressure cleaner, a trigger-nozzle hose, or a bucket. An open hose isn’t on that list, so a trigger nozzle is worth the few dollars. Check your own water authority.
Bowden’s Own The Essentials Starter Kit: complete, and priced like it
The Essentials Starter Kit is the one to buy if you want a single box and no second trip to the shop. Bowden’s Own lists it at $244.99, and inside are two 15L buckets with a lid, two grit guards, Nanolicious Wash, a wash pad, Wet Dreams sealant, Boss Gloss, a drying towel and a microfibre wash.
That’s 11 items at about $22 each, and nearly all of them are things you’ll use every wash. The gap is wheels. There’s no wheel cleaner, brush or third bucket, so budget for those if your alloys collect brake dust.
Waxit Car Wash Kit: the best cheap start
The Waxit Car Wash Kit is the cheapest way to replace an old sponge and chamois with proper gear. Waxit had it at $49.95 (was $68.45) on 5 October, for Nv SNOW pH-neutral wash, an Aquatouch BOSS wash mitt and a BIG FELLA V2 drying towel. Three items, all of them core.
There’s no bucket, no grit guard and no protection. Pair it with the Bowden’s Own 2 Bucket Wash Kit at $77.99 and you have a complete two-bucket wash for under $130. Add a sealant later, once the habit sticks.
Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Collector’s Kit: the one on the shelf
Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Collector’s Detailing Kit is the easiest kit to buy today, off the shelf at Supercheap Auto for $82.99. It packs Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo and Conditioner, Ultimate Quik Wax, a wash mitt, drying towel and a multi-purpose cloth into a re-sealable 15L bucket.
The weakness is the single bucket with no grit guard, which is exactly where swirl marks start. Supercheap’s site showed it as unavailable for delivery on 5 October, so check store stock. Add Bowden’s two-bucket set and the Meguiar’s bucket becomes your wheel bucket.
MIRCH Exterior Car Wash Kit: the only one that does wheels
The MIRCH Exterior Car Wash Kit is the pick if your wheels are the dirtiest part of the car. Waxit lists it at $164.95 (was $220.15) on 5 October. It’s the only kit here with wheel care: Grime Reaper wheel cleaner, a wheel brush and a dilute bottle, plus Kraken Blizzard snow foam, Dragon Tide wash, a mitt, towel and Leviathan Mist ceramic detailer.
Two things are missing. There are no buckets, and the snow foam needs a foam cannon or sprayer you’ll have to buy separately. Add both and this becomes the most expensive route here, so buy it for the chemicals, not the convenience.
Waxit Enthusiast Car Wash Kit: for pressure washer owners
The Waxit Enthusiast Car Wash Kit is the one to buy if a pressure washer already lives in the shed. Waxit had it at $114.95 (was $137.40) on 5 October, with an Nv Snowstorm V2 foam cannon, Nv SNOW and SNOW+ washes, a BOSS mitt, BIG FELLA V2 towel and an adaptor matched to your washer brand.
Snow foam loosens grit before the mitt touches the paint, which is the safest wash order there is. The weakness is everything else: no buckets, no protection, and several adaptor versions were out of stock on 5 October. Waxit publishes no minimum pressure, while Bowden’s Own Snow and Blow pack ($139.99) states 1800 PSI.
What does a complete kit really cost?
Once you add the buckets most kits skip, the cheapest complete two-bucket wash is $127.94, not $244.99. That’s the Waxit Car Wash Kit plus Bowden’s Own two-bucket set. Meguiar’s comes in at $160.98 with wax included, and only Bowden’s Essentials kit needs nothing added at all.
Assumptions: prices as at 5 October 2026 (Waxit and MIRCH prices are sale prices with no published end date). The add-on is Bowden’s Own 2 Bucket Wash Kit at $77.99, which supplies two buckets, two grit guards and a lid. Wheel cleaner, pressure washer and foam cannon are not costed.
What not to do with a new detailing kit
Don’t buy a kit for its bottle count, and don’t wash in direct summer sun, where shampoo dries on the panel before you rinse it. Don’t use the wash mitt on the wheels either. Keep a separate brush, or the brake dust ends up in the paint. A clean car also shows tired lenses, which is where headlight restoration kits come in.
Once the paint is clean and protected, keep it that way. A DIY ceramic coating kit is the next step for owners who’ve nailed the two-bucket routine, and an outdoor car cover protects the finish if the car lives on the street.
The verdict: buy Bowden’s Essentials if you want one box and no thinking. Buy the Waxit kit and a pair of buckets if you’d rather keep $117 for the sealant, which is where the shine actually comes from.
